Typhoon Response Thanks to the genorousity of our supporters around the UK, we have been able to send £1500 to provide basic food relief to 450 street families badly affected by Typhoon Ketsana. Sol has sent me through some more details of what is happening on the ground, these are the latest figures from the National Disaster Coordinating Council: Total number of families affected 828,159, 15,0733 in Metro Manila - that's 4,081,596 people in all, 757,201 in Manila. There are 64,404 families (339,251 people) remaining in 527 evacuation centres. 295 have dies, 39 are still missing. 16,219 homes have been totally destroyed; 22,849 partially damaged. The total estimated cost of damage to infrastructure and agriculture: P9.767 billion - that's over £130,000,000. So far, Kanlungan have distributed 300 bags of goods to families in Manila, including those in Smokey Mountain. They have also received a donation of 2,000 bags of goods from the local government of San Pedro which the staff distributed to the affected families in Tunasan and San Pedro. There are still many more families that need help. The money Streetlight has already sent is being used to buy more goods to be distributed. Sol writes: "Please continue to lift us all in prayers especially those families who are in evacuation centers and those who have no homes to return to yet, and that no more typhoon like that to come here in the Philippines. Though Kanlungan centers were not affected, I led the children to cry out in prayer to the Lord for those people who have been affected by the flood so that they can also feel the burden for the children and families who have no homes. That is the greatest contribution the children can give in this crisis-- to pray." The Malate Centre We are still raising money so that Kanlungan can pay off the final balance on the Malate Centre house. If you would like to contribute to this, why not sponsor Phil & Danny - two young adults from St John's Mansfield, who cycling from Mansfield to Lincoln, Lincoln to Skegness, Skegness to Boston, Boston to Newark and then Newark to Mansfield. It will take five days to cover 170 miles on mountain bikes. You can donate on-line by following the 'Giving' on this page or if your on Facebook, join their group "Danny and Phil are riding bikes for Charity" |
